MACS

A Community-Oriented, Student-Run Organization

Founded in 2002, MACS engages in public outreach events, philanthropy, and fundraisers. Our outreach events are held at several community organizations, including the University of Arizona's Biosphere 2, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, along with many local schools, to name a few.  Outreach events include squid dissections, shark anatomy, intertidal education, plastic pollution, and sustainable fishing. We are always in the process of adding new exciting stations.

At the University of Arizona, we participate in the annual Tucson Festival of Books, Spring Fling, Camp Wildcat, U of A Food Day, Wildcat World Fair, Earth Day, and many more.  We have partnered with other conservation organizations such as CEDO Intercultural, Viva Vaquita, Seafood Watch, and the Center for Biological Diversity, to provide exceptional, educational outreach events in the Tucson community.

Educational Trips

MACS goes on semesterly trips to the ocean with the past two trips being to San Diego and visiting La Jolla Beach, Scripps Pier, and the UCSD campus among other locations. During the trip we meet with faculty from marine science institutions, participate in beach clean ups, go on boat tours, and go tide-pooling! These trips are an important part of our club—providing opportunities for students aspiring to create a career in marine science.

Fundraising

Another important aspect of our organization is fundraising. We fundraise for either our clubs operations or for a non-profit relating to marine conservation. Fundraising helps our organization pay for club expenses, subsidize the cost of our trips and keeps us active in the greater conservation and marine community.
